Air Awakens

I came across Elise Kova’s writing by pure chance.  I was researching Danielle L. Jensen’s Malediction Trilogy, when I came across an interview hosted by Kova.  Anyone who supports fellow authors has a good chance of earning my attention.

Air Awakens is the first book in a five part series.  Kova’s passion for romance fantasy can be felt in the characters she creates.  The book follows the tale of Vhalla Yarl as she comes to terms with her magical powers – and those who want to exploit them.

The story has an easy-reading style.  It uses well chosen imagery to create a world that’s easy for the reader to see.  But it’s definitely the characters that stand out.

Kova provides character depth by balancing confidence with doubts; fear with courage; love with dislike; etc.  Half of the conflict in this book comes from the characters internal struggles.  Kova does this masterfully, and the result is a cast that springs to life early in the tale.

Air Awakens is an enjoyable tale.  The characters and imagery were so vivid, I felt like I watched an animated film instead of reading a book.
