Wake of Vultures

Wake of Vultures is definitely a page turner.  Bowen keeps the action high in this tale while doing a great job with character development.  The main character, Nettie Lonesome, has a good balance of strengths and weaknesses – it makes her both admirable and endearing.

The stand-out feature of this novel is the setting: old west America crawling with all sorts of supernatural creatures.  It made for a surprisingly effective backdrop for a fantasy story!

Bowen weaves some themes (love, sexuality, gender issues, etc.) into her novel, as well.  She makes sure they add to the tale and never lets them overpower the plot or action.

Wake of Vultures brings a fresh new setting to the fantasy genre.
